Capital Improvement Program (CIP) continues investment to improve infrastructure
(Hanover Township, PA) – On Tuesday, November 26th, the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA) Board of Governors unanimously approved a $36.7 million operating budget for all three aviation facilities (Lehigh Valley International Airport, Queen City Airport, and Braden Airpark), plus a nearly $49.1 million Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for fiscal year 2020 during their monthly meeting at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg.
“We’ll continue to stay the course of being fiscally responsible and strategic. But, this year also brings a continued commitment to infrastructure reinvestment which typically impacts the region through job creation due to the nature of these large scale projects,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northamton Airport Authority.
For a fifth consecutive year, the landing rate at Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) will decrease to $4.70 (2-cent drop from $4.72), while terminal rates increase to $88.75 (13.1 %) following the rehabilitation of escalators / elevators in the Main Terminal and Wilfred M. “Wiley” Post Departure Concourse. In October, the Airport Authority also announced plans for a $22 million Security Checkpoint and Terminal Connector expected to be complete by 2022. The connector elevates the customer experience by eliminating multiple vertical transitions, while also adding two additional Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security screening lanes.
“If you really dissect the numbers, the Airport Authority’s core business of airfield and facility management is driving the revenue increases for 2020. 25 consecutive months of passenger traffic increases, additional flights / destinations has resulted in more people using the facility,” said Todd Quann, Director of Finance & Administration, LNAA.
Since 2015, the Airport Authority has self-funded approximately $38 million in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP). For FY2020, the LNAA continues demonstrating its strong and unwavering commitment to necessary reinvestment in critical infrastructure with $17.7 million earmarked for projects. Below is a list of several major investments:
Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE)
Queen City Airport (XLL)
Braden Airpark
Factor the receipt of grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), PennDOT Bureau of Aviation, and combine it with the LNAA captial share; the total overall cost of the 2020 CIP is $49,096,792.
“This program is a very good balance between deferred maintenance items and new initiatives within the airport system that can result in revenue generation and enhancing the customer experience at all three of our facilities,” said Ryan Meyer, Director of Planning and Programming, LNAA.
