Makala A. Ashmar Military Resource Center

Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) has unveiled the “Makala A. Ashmar” Military Resource Center – which honors the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving in the nation’s armed forces.

“We are extremely proud to open the Military Resource Center – a mission Makala started – the completion of which ensures her legacy lives on forever at ABE,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

Makala inspired her family, friends, and colleagues during a courageous battle with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma – an aggressive and rare cancer of the bile duct. She passed away in September 2020. Located just beyond the TSA Checkpoint (next to the Sensory Room in the Departure Building), military personnel and veterans can just slow down with a seat on the couch, decompress by watching some TV, or just grab a quick snack to go. Before taking off or returning from a deployment, traveling home for the holidays, or taking a well-deserved vacation – ABE hopes military personnel feel at home in your neighborhood airport.

This amazing project would not have been possible without the commitment of sponsors from across the Lehigh Valley: Presenting Sponsor: Service Electric Cable TV and Communications, Interior Workplace Solutions, Fast Signs of Easton, Mike Geiger, Lisa Scheller, NAM Nights, The Mayberry-Avizoff Family, Westgate Global Logistics, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Bethlehem Volunteer Fireman’s Home Association, Online Power Service, Inc., Blue Star Mom’s and Gold Star Mom’s, and LNAA staff.

Sensory Room

In partnership with The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) constructed a sensory room becoming the 3rd airport in the world to do so for our air travelers with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Located in the Concourse Building, the room is equipped with mondo flooring, low frequency lighting, a mounted projector and other sensory equipment.  Thank you to all our sponsors!  Lead Sponsors: MassMutual / Pennwood

St. Luke’s University Health Network Hydration Stations

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) liquids ban forces travelers to dump water/beverage(s) before passing through the screening checkpoint. By adding a dump station prior to the checkpoint (Level 1, Main Terminal) and refill stations beyond the checkpoint (Wiley Departure Buildings) passengers can hold onto their empty bottle(s) and have a convenient way to immediately refill at the gate area.

In partnership with Allentown Public Library, Bethlehem Area Public Library, and Easton Area Public Library, the Airport Book Exchange was created with a simple premise: Take a book, leave a book. Passengers can take any book (or books) that appeals to them or can leave a book when they are finished with it. All the books are free to enjoy. Located near Gate 7 in the Wilfred M. Wiley Post Jr Concourse, the Airport Book Exchange bookshelf is a popular stopping point for readers of all ages.
