Busy Summer Travel Season at ABE

September 23rd, 2019 |

274,431 passengers from June through August – highest total since 2003

(Hanover Township, PA) – Traffic soared through the 2019 summer travel season at Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE).

From June through August, 274,431 passengers chose their neighborhood airport to takeoff for their vacations and business trips – the highest total over that period since 2003 (276,762).

90,524 passengers used ABE in August – a 16.28 percent increase from Aug. ’18 – which also marks 23 consecutive months of positive passenger growth dating back to October 2017.

Month              Passengers                Percentage increase             Month              Passengers

Aug. ’19               90,524                                 16.28%                        Aug. ’18                77,851

“We anticipated this would be among the busiest summers in Airport history with the continued strong economy, combined with the fact that passengers now have even more nonstop options beyond the existing vacation destinations with the addition of new routes to Nashville and Savannah / Hilton Head,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

By the August numbers, United reported a strong passenger increase of 39.2%, with Allegiant posting another solid month at 25.4%, followed by American up 16.1%.  Due to inclement weather forcing flight cancellations in the South, Delta had a slight decrease of 2.9%.

“Numbers continue to indicate an extremely positive trend which the Airport has experienced since that start of the year. It seems that every month, a different airline is leading the pack in growth, as air travelers in the Lehigh Valley realize they can travel with ease while receiving the highest level of customer service at ABE.  Our attention is now shifting to the busy holiday travel season which is fast approaching,” said Stoudt.
