The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA) joined American Airlines to recognize three employees with the “Real American Hero Award” for their quick actions during a medical emergency involving a passenger at Lehigh Valley International Airport.
At award presentation on Thursday, January 12 in the 3rd Flood Board Room, Jerry Caler, Regional Managing Director Northeast & Canada presented the “Real American Hero” cape to the following airline representatives:
Cinde Monsam – General Manager (Allentown), American Airlines
Melissa Oravec – Customer Service Coordinator, American Airlines,
Sharon Azis – Customer Service Agent, American Airlines
On December 9, 2016, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) were dispatched to the Main Terminal following the report of an unresponsive female. Upon their arrival, the American Airlines employee was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and applied use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
”We all worked as a team with Melissa calling 911, Sharon grabbed the AED and I assessed the customer before applying aid,” said Cinde Monsam, General Manager Allentown, American Airlines.
The passenger regained consciousness in the ambulance before transport to a local hospital.
The airline employees recently completed the (CPR) training course offered by the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority in June, 2016.
“The Airport Authority is glad they took advantage of the training and felt confident enough in what they learned to automatically provide that passenger medical assistance which helped save her life,” said Charles Everett, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.
Any active American Airlines employee who performs an act in a life-threatening situation is eligible to receive the “Real American Hero” Award. Potential acts of heroism include, but are not limited to: utilizing an AED, performing CPR, performing the Heimlich maneuver, applying first aid or assisting in the efforts to help.
“Each of us utilized the skills we learned in the course which resulted in a positive outcome that makes all us happy,” said Monsam.
